Probably an unpopular opinion. Don’t read if you’re a brothers-only stan. Seriously. Don’t.

I’d like to add that cutting out all of Sam and Dean’s family that aren’t related by blood disassociates a large portion of the fanbase.  Some of the fans come from families that aren’t close or that are outright abusive.  Part of what drew me to Supernatural is that, even though it’s about family, it’s about how family is difficult, how it’s “not supposed to be easy,” to quote Bobby.  And even though Sam and Dean come from a history of neglect and psychological abuse, they were able to choose their family to some extent, they grew close with people like Bobby, Jo, Ellen and Castiel because they could rely on these people and trust them with their lives, even though they weren’t blood relatives.  All of the people listed above were people that the Winchesters chose to consider family.

That’s the kind of message that needs to be shown more often, because there are many shows that are already about loving your family because they’re your family.  But those aren’t shows that I can connect with, because sometimes your family hurts you, and they’re not what’s best for you.  Supernatural is about that hurt, and that’s why I connect with it, and it’s about the fact that you can choose who hurts you, and you can become a better person for it.

To cut out all of the friends that Dean and Sam have made, all the people they consider family, would send the message that “nothing matters more than blood.”  That’s not a message that I (or many other viewers) agree with.

Reblogging this because I think you make a very good point. That’s another important reason why the show shouldn’t be limited to just Sam and Dean.

Your Daily Reminder That

kaylkat:

  • your limitations are real and don’t make you worthless no matter how low they are or how high you want them to be
  • it’s okay to want your limitations to be higher but
  • you and your mental/emotional/physical health are important
  • taking time off from responsibilities and obligations so you can look after yourself does not make you a bad person
  • doing nothing all day but things you like & make you happy doesn’t mean you’re lazy or shirking your work
  • it’s a form of self care
  • you are worth looking after
  • you are worth looking after
  • you are fucking worth looking after
